World Book Day 2017

To celebrate world book day (which was yesterday) I thought it would be a nice idea to send someone a book.

I didn’t have to ponder for too long about which book to send. One person who has always inspired me is J. K. Rowling. Her books filled my childhood with such excitement, adventure and love. The joy and eagerness I would feel waking up on the morning of a new book release have not been matched by anything since (and I don’t expect they will be). I remember the anticipation I felt as I sat at the top of the stairs waiting for the blurry silhouette of our postman approaching our front door to appear. I remember the euphoric moment when I finally held my new treasure in my hands for the first time.

The book I chose to send to celebrate World Book Day was:

Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination

The book is a transcript of J. K. Rowling’s 2008 commencement speech at Harvard University. And is bursting at the seams with pearls of wisdom.

My sister graduated last year and was therefore the most perfect recipient of Very Good Lives.

My favourite quote is

“We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.”

If you haven’t read this speech you can find a transcript here or buy the book here. It would make a wonderful gift for someone who has just graduated, needs a little encouragement to try something new or (of course) just because you can.
