Nikki McWilliams: hump day happiness

Today’s hump day happiness has a biscuit theme. Saturday is National Biscuit day and I could not let this day pass without sharing THE QUEEN OF BISCUITS herself with you… Nikki McWilliams!

  1. Who are you and what do you do?

NikkiMcWilliams_Biscuit_Hair_2017_WEB-7Hello! I’m Nikki, AKA The Biscuit Lady. I run a wee design business from my studio in central Scotland- making all sorts of things inspired by my favourite edible treats, pop culture and lots of colour!
  1. How/where/why did Nikki McWilliams begin?

I’d been running little business ventures since I was wee (one of my first was a stand in my front garden selling individual Monster Munch crisps for 5p each to neighbouring children) so I think the idea of working for myself had always been ingrained.
  1. What inspires your designs?

Food, popular culture, packaging design and nostalgia.

  1. Who inspires you?

There are so many amazing creatives who are really killing it right now! I follow a super diverse crowd over on Instagram- take a look at my “following” list to see who I love!
  1. What tools do you use to create your designs?

I draw by hand and scan in to the computer. I use lots of different pens, but gel ink, brush pens and sharpies are my fave. I edit on an iMac with adobe photoshop.

  1. What is your favourite item to make?

I love designing new textile pieces! That’s the super fun part for me. I recently sent away some designs for pencil cases– which I’m so excited to get back. The fabric’s due to arrive next week and then we can make up the samples. That’s the most exciting!
  1. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

We saw an exhibition at the DCA in Dundee on Sister Corita Kent’s work, She had a whole manifesto on creativity but her main one is: “The Only Rule is Work”. She was a very wise lady!

My favourites

I love a biscuit and a cup of tea. Inspired by Nikki’s work I bought some custard creams, jammie dodgers and party rings the other day. I had planned on using them as photo props but I had an accident… or snaccident to be more precise. It’s the thought that counts right?!

Anyway… since stumbling across Nikki’s awesome work on Instagram, I have bought quite a few of Nikki’s biscuit inspired treasures for my home. I was over the moon when she agreed to answer my questions! Her amazing #pingame wall banner is currently hanging in my lounge. I was looking for a fun way to display my small collection of enamel pins and her banner ticked the box perfectly.

I have been using Nikki’s pink “biscuits deco tape” to wrap all of my friends’ presents and also as a make shift camera stand for my phone. It’s more of a sellotape than a washi tape and comes on a large roll which is great because it should last longer!

TAPE_CutOut_Pink_HIGH (1) My favourite has to be Nikki’s custard cream cushion. I spent ages trying to decide which colour to buy. It was a close call between the yellow or the pink. In the end I stuck with a traditional custard cream yellow. Here it is on my pink garden bench:

Isn’t it the sweetest?! I hope you enjoy Nikki’s wonderful work and I am sorry if I have ruined any diets by posting about biscuits! You can discover more about Nikki’s work here:
