Sew Me Sunshine

Happy hump day friends!

I met the wonderful Harriet in Margate. We were there on a colour walk hosted by Lucky Dip Club and In Colourful Company. It was one of the best days out I have had all year! After looking through Harriet’s dreamy collections of fabrics and sewing accessories online (I mean, check out this gorgeous acorn print and these amazing doughnut pattern weights), I couldn’t wait for her to appear on the blog!

  1. Who are you and what do you do?

IMG_20170828_233637_911Hello everyone! My name is Harriet and I love drinking tea whilst sewing my own clothes. Three weeks ago I opened my own online fabric and haberdashery shop called Sew Me Sunshine.
  1. How/where/why did Sew Me Sunshine begin?

In November last year I had to take some time out of work due to illness. Whilst being out of work I got back into drawing and writing in my bullet journal. My husband realised how much I enjoyed being creative and he knew that I had always wanted to learn to sew, so in March this year he bought me my first ever sewing machine. I was so excited but I had never even threaded a machine before let alone sewn anything, so I booked myself onto an introduction to sewing weekend course with Sew Over It. From the moment I finished my first ever make (a cushion cover!) I fell in love with sewing. I found sewing extremely therapeutic and I loved how it allowed me to be creative with my own wardrobe. I started to become a little obsessed with buying fabrics. I love choosing that bit of material and dreaming of what it can become. My husband could see how happy I was in front of my machine and came up of the master plan behind Sew Me Sunshine. I was super scared to follow my dream to open Sew Me Sunshine, but after all the amazing support and encouragement from In Colourful Company and the creative/sewing community I took the plunge 12 weeks ago, and I am really happy that I did.
  1. What inspires your designs?

icm_fullxfull.117248758_8re4wdmpklc04cwo088w (1).jpgI spend a lot of my time searching for fun fabric that will make people smile and inspire them to sew. I also source sewing tools; these tools vary from classic sewing tools that will be around forever to fun cute tools that will cheer up your sewing space. Not only do I stock fabric and tools, but I also sell craft making kits, dressmaking patterns and sewing related flair (including pins!) In each of my parcels that I send out I include a special sewing themed postcard that I designed, which I absolutely love and have them stuck on my wall in my sewing room.
  1. Who inspires you?

IMG-20170820-WA0053This is a tough question, and although this may be a bit of a cheesy answer it is the truth. I have been inspired by all of the sewing community out there and all of the creative friends that I have made through In Colourful Company.
  1. What tools do you use to create your designs?

I am super lucky to have a computer geek for a husband; he has spent a lot of time setting up my website. We also use Sketch for our postcard designs. Outside of the business I use my trusty Janome sewing machine to sew my own colourful fun wardrobe. Oh and I would be lost without my tape measure and fabric shears!
  1. What is your favourite item to make?

IMG_20170902_133557_960Business wise I love receiving stock for the website, especially the gorgeous fabrics. When I have time to sew for myself my favourite make is definitely the Sew Over It Betty Dress, I love how quick it is to put together and the big circle skirt is just so much fun to twirl around in.
  1. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

That it takes time to make a creative business truly work. A lot of my friends in the creative community have super successful businesses but it took them years to make it into what it is today. They told me to be patient and to not compare myself to other people’s businesses.

Ahh how gorgeous are Sew Me Sunshine’s photos?! If you would like to discover more about Harriet and her fabulous fabric, check out the links below:
