True colours

Written by Billy Steinberg & Tom Kelly

Illustrated by Sarah Walsh

“But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow”

“True Colors” features the song lyrics written by American songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. The song was written for Cyndi Lauper and, when it was released in 1986, it reached number one in the charts. Cyndi Lauper later went on to name her charity “True Colorado Fund”. The charity aims to “end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth, creating a world where all young people can be their true selves” (

True colours is brought to life by the amazingly talented Sarah Walsh. Each page is an explosion of colour. This book is a wonderful way to let someone know that you love them.

Whether you read the lyrics out loud like a story book or sing along to the illustrations, this book is beautiful.

All the ways to be smart

Written by Davina Bell

Illustrated by Allison Colpoys

Look what arrived yesterday! The latest book by our favourite duo Davina Bell and Allison Colpoys! Ahh I can’t tell you how excited I was to find this on our doormat yesterday afternoon.

This beautifully written story celebrates all of the ways children can be smart. From painting patterns, being mermaids, sharing, caring to showing kindness when others are upset. This books celebrates childhood and how uniquely wonderful each child is. All the ways to be smart, like under the love umbrella, is written in rhyme and is a pleasure to read aloud.

As always, Allison Colpoys has excelled at bringing Davina’s beautiful words to life. There are unicorns, dragons, dinosaurs, pirates, astronauts, lions and mermaids to find in this book. Allison always chooses the most beautiful colour palettes. All the ways to be smart, the underwater fancy-dress parade and under the love umbrella all have a signature flash of neon orange. I just love the little details Allison adds to her illustrations such as neon orange stars on her astronaut’s trousers or tiny ants sealing sandwiches.

“Every hour of every day, we’re smart in our own special way” – a beautiful book celebrating children

I’ll love you…

Written by Kathryn Cristaldi

Illustrated by Kristyna Litten

This is a fun story packed full of imagination and love. Kathryn Cristaldi has taken a fresh look at the old saying “until the cows come home”. Instead of just being let out to pasture, the cows in this book have taken an adventurous trip to Mars. Cow’s aren’t the only fun creatures in this story, oh no. I’ll love you until the cows come home, the yaks come back and the frogs ride past.

Kathryn Cristaldi started out as a children’s book editor and has now authored many books including Samantha the snob and baseball ballerina. In “I’ll love you…” Kathryn has gifted us with a creative and fun way to tell our little ones how much we love them. The story is written in rhyme and has a beautiful rhythm to it. It’s also full of animals so is a great story for the animal lover in your life. We have enjoyed reading this book every day since it arrived last week.

Kristyna Litten is a children’s author and illustrator. We first found her wonderful work when we checked Norton and alpha out of our local library. A quick search online for more of her work led us to “I’ll love you…” and we pre-ordered it straight away.

Kristyna’s illustrations typically begin as quick pencil drawings and then the colours and beautiful textures are added digitally. I love the cow’s expression in the foreground. Her illustrations are a joy to return to again and again as you reread the book.
